Year 8 Students Inspired by Illustrator Ben Rothery

Posted 18th June 2026

Year 8 students recently had the exciting opportunity to take part in a virtual artist drawing event in partnership with Learning in Liverpool, led by renowned illustrator Ben Rothery.

Joining from his studio, Ben shared insights into his creative process and the inspiration behind his work. A detail-obsessed illustrator originally from Norwich, Ben creates intricate and vibrant illustrations using a blend of techniques. His work is heavily influenced by the natural world - a passion that began in childhood when he dreamed of becoming everything from a dinosaur to a wildlife explorer!

Ben’s impressive career includes winning the prestigious Silver Pencil Award in 2021 for Hidden Planet, with his work now published internationally. During the session, he introduced students to his unique style, characterised by fine detail, repeating patterns, and the exclusive use of pencils.

Inspired by Ben’s approach, our students created their own comic strips and illustrations based on the natural world, experimenting with line, detail, and creativity using only pencils. It was a brilliant opportunity for students to engage with a professional illustrator and develop their own artistic skills.
