World Book Day, celebrating women, maths competitions: a round up of our week

Posted 16th March 2026 by Nick Hughes, Principal

Last week, our school had much to celebrate and take pride in: celebrating a love for reading and maths and acknowledging International Women's Day and the incredible women who have shaped our lives. We also had the pleasure of meeting some of our new students who will be joining us this September.

Here's a round up of our week:

World Book Day
Students across the academy enjoyed a fantastic World Book Day celebration last week. The day included a whole-school quiz, dedicated DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) sessions focused on the theme of belonging, and a collaborative whole-school puzzle display that brought together contributions from students across year groups. Staff also joined the fun by dressing up as book characters, helping to create a vibrant atmosphere that celebrated reading, imagination and the joy of stories.

International Women’s Day
To mark International Women’s Day, students took part in library lessons exploring and challenging gender stereotypes. Through group discussion, humour and myth-busting activities, students reflected on common misconceptions and considered how we can all play a role in creating a more equal society. The sessions encouraged thoughtful conversation and reinforced the importance of respect and opportunity for everyone.

UKMT Team Maths Challenge
A team of our Year 8 and Year 9 students represented Dixons Fazakerley Academy brilliantly in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge. Competing across four rounds, the challenge required teamwork, communication and quick mathematical thinking. Our students approached the competition with enthusiasm and determination, demonstrating impressive problem-solving skills and excellent collaboration.

Year 6 Open Evening
We were delighted to welcome many local families to our Year 6 open evening this week. The event saw strong attendance and fantastic engagement from parents and students who came to learn more about life at Dixons Fazakerley Academy. A huge thank you goes to our staff and student ambassadors who helped bring the evening to life and shared their experiences with warmth and pride.

What stood out to me this week is the breadth of experiences our students are benefiting from. In the space of just a few days they have been celebrating reading, debating important ideas about equality, tackling complex mathematical challenges and proudly representing their school to the next generation of Dixons Fazakerley students.

Education should open doors. It should build confidence, curiosity and character. When students read widely, think critically, work as a team and speak with pride about their school, we know we are heading in the right direction.

Thank you to our staff, students and families who continue to make Dixons Fazakerley a school where opportunity, belonging and ambition sit at the heart of everything we do.
