Joy in reading, competition and theatre productions - our recent weeks at Dixons Fazakerley
Posted 27th January 2026 by Nicholas Hughes
We have had a busy few weeks at Dixons Fazakerley where our students immersed themselves in cultural experiences, sports extravaganzas and the joy in reading. Here is my round up of what happened inside Dixons Fazakerley in the last week:
Gift of reading – Year 7
Last week, Year 7 pupils selected their Gift of Reading books - a personal gift designed to spark genuine reading for pleasure. Students took real care in choosing a book that spoke to their interests, creating a lovely buzz around reading. They will receive their books in their next library lesson, reinforcing our commitment to making reading joyful, meaningful, and accessible to every student.
Liverpool school immunisation nursing team visit
The Liverpool School Immunisation Nursing Team attended the academy last week to deliver routine vaccinations. The visit was well‑organised and ran smoothly, with pupils showing excellent behaviour and staff ensuring efficient coordination throughout the day. This helped maintain statutory health provision and supported overall pupil wellbeing.
Events from this week
Year 1 & 2 mat ball competition – a huge success
This week, the Year 1 and 2 Mat Ball competition proved to be an outstanding event, highlighting the exceptional leadership of our sports leaders. Supported by the Liverpool School Sports Partnership, our Year 9 and 10 students excelled as coaches, referees, and scorekeepers. Their professionalism, patience, and enthusiasm ensured smooth organisation from start to finish.
With 24 primary schools taking part, the event was full of excitement and energy. Our sports leaders represented the academy superbly and created a positive, memorable experience for all involved.
Mary Poppins theatre trip
Students attended the Mary Poppins theatre production last week and represented the academy brilliantly. Students enjoyed excellent seats in the circle but the highlight of the show was Mary Poppins flying above the audience - passing right by the students, which they found absolutely thrilling. Their behaviour was exemplary throughout, and the trip provided a fantastic cultural enrichment experience that students talked about long after the show ended.
All Aboard Youth Rowing indoor championship – silver medals
At the AAYR event last week, the boys’ relay team won silver medals, delivering an outstanding performance.
In the individual races, our students secured 6th, 8th and 10th places and Mr Flynn placed 3rd in the staff race!
The team demonstrated excellent effort, teamwork, and resilience. Students demonstrated exemplary behaviour and a clear sense of pride!
I look forward to updating you again soon
