Debate Mate Cup
Posted 26th April 2023
On Wednesday 26 April, Fazakerley’s debate team competed in the Debate Mate Cup at Liverpool John Moores University. We took three teams to the event, hoping to build on the success of the previous competitions. The first debate was a prepared motion, which asked students to discuss the effectiveness of strike action. Thanks to effective preparation and coordinated teamwork, all three of our debate teams managed to win their first round. As the day went on, the competition became fiercer, and our less experienced teams began to lose points. Fazakerley’s A Team, however, continued to score highly across all of their debates. After three gruelling rounds, the winning teams were announced, ready to compete in the Grand Final. Unfortunately, on this occasion, we ranked 3rd overall, narrowly missing out on a Grand Final place by only a few points. Despite not winning the competition, the programme director stated that Fazakerley’s A Team did not technically lose any of their debates, meaning that they retain their undefeated record. We now look forward to competing in the Grand Finals of the Urban Debate League in London next month.
