Students bring their voices to life in social action writing workshop

This week, our students took part in a powerful social action writing workshop led by local poet Amina Atiq. Over the course of an hour, students explored issues they care deeply about - from community concerns to global challenges - and transformed their ideas into written manifestos. They discussed homophobia, racism, gender inequality, environmental issues, educational disadvantage, misogyny and so much more!

Amina guided the group through thoughtful discussion, helping students identify what matters to them and why. The room quickly filled with energy, creativity, and genuine passion for making a difference.

By the end of the session, students had crafted their own manifestos and even stepped up to perform them in front of their peers - something many would never normally volunteer to do! Their confidence and conviction were incredible to witness.

This session marks the first of three workshops with Amina. In the coming weeks, students will continue developing their ideas and begin crafting their own social action poems or other creative pieces inspired by their manifestos. Amina will also be turning the work from this first workshop into a collaborative poem celebrating the students’ voices.

We’re excited to see how their writing evolves and to share the powerful pieces they create. A huge thank you to Amina for bringing such enthusiasm, warmth, and expertise to our school - we’re already looking forward to the next session!
