Our academy joins EEF trial to support maths progress in Year 7
Posted 6th August 2025
We are pleased to share that our academy has been selected to take part in a national Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) trial to support maths progress for Year 7 students. The trial is evaluating the Making Fluent and Flexible Calculators (MFFC) programme, designed to help students with low prior attainment in maths develop key calculation strategies.
Following the first stage of randomisation, our school has been allocated to the treatment group. This means that we will be working closely with HFL Education to deliver the MFFC programme throughout the 2025–26 academic year.
What this means for our school
As part of our involvement, we will:
- Deliver the MFFC programme to Year 7 students in lower maths sets or maths intervention groups.
- Distribute information sheets to parents of participating students in November 2025, and forward any opt-out forms to the research team at King’s College London.
- Inform students about the trial and notify King’s College of any verbal opt-outs.
- Provide class details for eligible students to the research team in November 2025 and again in May 2026.
- Support the evaluation process by:
- Taking part in interviews where appropriate.
- Coordinating with an independent agency to support student assessments in June 2026.
What happens next
- After the October 2025 half-term, we will distribute information sheets to parents of students taking part in the programme. If any families require the information in a language other than English, we kindly ask that requests are sent to the research team by 30 September 2025. While every effort will be made to provide translations, availability may vary.
We are excited to be part of this important project and look forward to seeing the impact of the MFFC programme on our students’ confidence and progress in maths.
